Ironhorse

The Carrie Furnace, located in Rankin, PA near Pittsburgh, was first opened in 1884.  It was built in order to produce purified iron on a daily basis.  At one point, it was able to produce 1000 to almost 3000 tons of iron per day.

Inside of the furnaces, the environment was very dangerous. Extreme heat (app 1,000° C) and gases were by products from the furnaces operating 24 hrs per day.

The company closed in 1982 because of low demand.  Today part of the structure still stands, and there are tours available.  The land surrounding the old structure is now being revitalized as riverfront property, but the Carrie Furnace itself is being preserved.  It is a work of art and has tons of history.  It is a favorite place for artists and photographers.
